No artist is the greatest. Each is great in his/her own merit. The difference of one artist from the other contributes to the richness of art. If one claims that this artist is the greatest how about the others, are they less? On what standard? Each artist should be heard or seen in his/her own greatness. Comparing one with the other, one might miss the uniqueness of the artist and the purpose of art - the noble enjoyment of God's gift through his artists.

the value i find in schubert's poignant music - is that its not the crying out loud in your face sadness like chopin, but sadness that lingers , its not to sentimental - but stays in your heart longer...just listen to his last three piano sonatas, for instance....

Why is it that casual to interested in classical listening people like myself have never heard of Zimerman but yet know about Horowitz? How come he, Zimerman, was never in regular main stream media, any mention in news, musical shows or any other concerts that were televised for public to see?

@David Footerman Agreed, it's a shame that their mastery of art is not being known across all social platforms for all people to hear. What is your opinion of Kissin, as I've found him to be extraordinary as well and many experts and seasoned musicians have referred to him as a prodigy?
David Footerman

He doesn't do the rock star thing and he got pissed off with the US and won't play here much. It's a shame because one could argue that he is the greatest living pianist and the greatest recorded pianist too. The living artist lacks the mystique of the ones who have passed on, about whom we tend to fantasize. I loved the greatest of Richter's Schubert and had never heard an equal until I heard these impromptus. The opening of the C mi impromptu is played here with such pianistic perfection, it's extraordinary.

What wonderful playing. At 18.10 there is an unwanted F just after, and one octave below, the top F. Where does it come from? His hands are not over the key; but it's there and you can see the momentary wince in his expression as he hears it. What mechanical process on or in the piano caused it? There is a self-control, a natural restraint in Zimerman's playing that is the mark of a really great pianist. Sections are played fractionally slower to allow for natural lag in the fade of non-legato pedalled piano keys resulting in greater clarity in those sections. The sound is that of a Steinway. If, for example, it were a Bluthner, this would be even more important and Zimerman's playing would be even more translucent than anyone else's. Also, the virtuosity is there with unaffected modesty that allows one to hear dialog between longer phrases going on in Chopin's mind. You pick up things you never noticed before. I wish we had more of this man's repertoire on video.

If I was as astonishingly brilliant as Krystian Zimerman I wouldn't be sitting in my apartment watching a genius pianist. I would have if I had the talent be in a concert hall with my bed so that I don't have to leave the piano!! What a glorious rendition of Chopin and Schubert! I have more than 150 classical music CDs but it is another ball game when watching a concert or recital or better still attending one live!
